Volcano Art Center’s 2016 Hula Kahiko series continues 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a performance by Kumu Hula Manaiakalani Kalua with Akaunu.

Born and raised in Keaukaha, Kalua graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1996, and received a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian studies in 2002 from Ka Haka Ula o Kelikolani at UH-Hilo. He has been an instructor with Hawaii Community College’s Hawaiian lifestyles program since 2003. His halau, Akaunu, opened in 2012 and is closely tied to the traditions of Unukupukupu and Halau O Kekuhi.

This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the Volcano Art Center. For the series, hula halau from across Hawaii are invited to perform each month in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Held in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performances, the public is invited to join native Hawaiian culture specialist Kumu Hula Ab Valencia and members of Halau Hula Kalehuakiekieikaiu on the lanai of the Volcano Art Gallery from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Presenting a display of “Na Mea Hula” (all things hula), Valencia will share hula, various hula implements and lei making.

These free events are supported in part by a grant from the County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. National Park entrance fees apply.
